The North American trucking industry's share of freight transportation has increased substantially in the last few years, generating more demand for Class 6-8 Trucks. This increase in the number of Class 6-8 Trucks in operation is directly contributing to the growth of the North American powertrain systems and components aftermarket, as powertrain systems and components are integral parts of every truck, providing fuel economy, load-carrying capability, truck stability, safety and driver comfort.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.transportation.frost.com) reveals that revenues in the North American Class 6-8 Truck Powertrain Systems and Components Aftermarket totaled $2.54 billion in 2005 and can reach $3.20 billion in 2012.

"Newer powertrains are operationally more efficient, thus customers prefer updated trucks for freight transportation," notes Frost & Sullivan GIC Industry Manager Avijit Ghosh. "This is encouraging fleet operators to upgrade their trucks and doing so, also enables them to address the critical issue of driver retention, since drivers are more comfortable driving trucks with smooth and efficient powertrains."
While the trend toward increased upgrades expects to be a major driver over much of the forecast period, an added encouragement for the growth of the aftermarket is the implementation of the 2007 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
Since the U.S. EPA regulations necessitate the fitment of advanced engines, prices of new Class 6-8 Trucks will increase in the range of $7,000 to $11,000, post-2007. This will drive fleet operators to replace existing engines in older trucks with remanufactured engines and components, as a more cost-effective option to buying new engines. This factor is expected to significantly aid the growth of the remanufactured engines and components aftermarket in the medium to long term, and will exert a similar influence on the manufactured transmissions and components aftermarket.
However, technological advances in powertrain systems and components manufactured and remanufactured for Class 6-8 Trucks are a major challenge for the aftermarket's growth because of reduced replacement rates. Durability and reliability of different powertrain systems and components are now higher than before, and this results in longer life spans with extended cycle times between replacements. Moreover, increasing truck prices will cause fleet operators to delay replacement purchases until a truck's performance declines considerably.
"As soft parts become more durable, the expected lifespan of remanufactured engines are continuously increasing, reducing unit shipments in the aftermarket," says Ghosh. "Likewise, replacement rates of remanufactured transmissions are also likely to drastically decline because of the rapid technological upgrades that this segment has experienced in the last few years."
Overall, the total powertrain systems and components aftermarket is mature but competitive in terms of quality, price and customer service. Growth expects to be stronger from 2007 to 2009, due to higher replacement opportunities from older on-road trucks that will enter replacement phase. The average age of Class 6-8 Trucks also expects to increase from 2007 to 2009 because of increased pre-buying of trucks pre-2007 in anticipation of stricter emissions regulations, which are to be imposed in 2007.
