The first edition of the INDIA TELECOM event consisting of an exhibition and a conference will be held in NEW DELHI, between 14th - 16th December, 2006. This was announced in the industry meet on "INDIA TELECOM 2006" held here today. The meeting was presided over by Mr. M Sahu, Joint secretary (T), DOT, Ministry of Telecommunications, & IT, Govt. of India. "INDIA TELECOM -2006 is an initiative of DOT, FICCI and TEMA aimed to bring the buyout Indian Telecom industry at one platform to interact with International industry. Exhibitors & Leading companies from, Canada, China, Israel, USA, Taiwan , Singapore & Korea are taking part in the event. The India Telecom 2006 event would showcase India's advantage as well as global opportunities. The response of the participants assures the success of the event. The Industry Meet gave an insight on the progress being made in the preparations for "India Telecom 2006".

Launching the industry meet on India Telecom 2006, Shri, M, Sahu, said that INDIA TELECOM 2006 will carve a unique place and will become a truly global event for the telecom sectors. The overwhelming participation of global players highlights the opportunity for stakeholders to exchange knowledge, technology and to showcase the development in these sectors. The objective of this conference is to discuss new growth drivers that are revolutionizing the telecom sector in India and around the world and assess challenges and opportunities associated with new technologies and new growth frontiers. It would also focus on showcasing the huge potential that India holds in the Telecom sector for inviting investments. He highlighted the performance of the telecom sector, which is the largest in the world, and for the first time surpassing China.

Shri Sahu also highlighted the focus of the government for the development of the telecom sector besides strengthening the regulatory framework

The Department of Telecommunications and the FICCI have jointly launched the INDIA TELECOM EVENT. Indian Telecom Sector has been able to provide the state of art world - class telecom infrastructure at globally competitive tariffs and has reduced the digital divide by extending connectivity to unconnected areas. Renowned telecom companies are setting up their bases in India. Mobile telephone has now become the highest selling consumer goods.

The objective of the event is to discuss the new growth drivers that are revolutionizing the telecom sector in India and around the world and assess challenges and opportunities associated with the new technologies and new growth frontiers. The main focus area of the summit will be on encouraging R&D, technology development & absorption, indigenous manufacturing, growing trend towards convergence of technologies, bridging the digital - divide, challenges of regulation, increasing tele-density, creating skills and building people, future technologies, and investment promotion.
