HSBC Files Fraud Case Against Employee in Bangalore, India

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

A number of reports have appeared in the media this week regarding an incident of staff fraud in HSBC's service centre in Bangalore.

HSBC takes its data protection responsibilities very seriously. It has commenced legal action against Nadeem Kashmiri, who until earlier this month was an employee at its Bangalore global service centre.

HSBC has operated in India for over 150 years, and employs some 20,000 staff in the country. Just under 6,000 are involved in UK customer-related work. All our overseas staff are carefully selected, extensively trained and receive very favourable terms of employment by local market standards. It is obviously disappointing for HSBC and our staff that one individual has fallen short of the high standards that we set, but this is a very rare incident.

The fraud was uncovered by HSBC's own security teams, and Nadeem Kashmiri was suspended in April pending HSBC's investigations. As a result, HSBC is convinced that Nadeem Kashmiri had perpetrated the fraud. His employment was terminated and the crime reported to the Bangalore police. HSBC is assisting the Indian police in their investigations and the bank intends to pursue a conviction as vigorously as possible.

A small number of customers were affected and all are based in the UK.Affected customers have been contacted and, as will always be the case where a customer should be the victim of fraud, they will be reimbursed in full.

HSBC's service centre in Bangalore, indeed all its centres in India, provide a high level of customer service. Strict procedures are observed in all our centres to protect customer records, and the data security measures employed in our overseas centres are exactly the same as those in the UK.
Customer data is not stored on site in our overseas centres. Operators can only access data remotely and for the purposes of a specific customer enquiry.

HSBC employs over 280,000 people in 76 countries and territories around the world. Together with the vigilance of our staff, we have systems in place to maintain the highest standards of security.
