The Shilanayas of the proposed Artech-Dalmia Centre for Information Technology at the prestigious women's university, Banasthali Vidyapith, will take place at the Vidyapith on July 8, 2006. Banasthali Vidyapith, a 70-year-old institution dedicated to providing education to women, would offer Bachelors and Masters degree and M Tech in Information Technology at the Centre.
According to Mr Ajay Poddar, Managing Director of Artech India: "The idea was to bring IT closer to the female students, and to tap students from areas that get ignored by the conventional universities and institutes."

The IT Centre will be equipped with the latest technological aids to impart better/faster education, such as internally networked specialized computer laboratories, communication lab, software engineering lab, VLSI design lab and multimedia laboratory. Equipped with gigabit LAN and high bandwidth Internet connectivity, it will also offer videoconferencing-ready seminar room and hi-tech lecture rooms and library.
"The IT Centre will help women gain expertise in an area that is key to the economy of today," says Ms Ranjini Poddar, President of Artech Information Systems, LLC, the parent organisation of Artech India. "We are trying to address the shortage of women in software development through this initiative."
Surveys have repeatedly exposed a lacuna in IT hiring trends - there is a decipherable tilt towards male developers. While a recent survey found the number of women in IT to be less than 30%, some estimates put it at less than even 10%. "When compared to the percentage of women in other fields, this is woefully low," says Ms Poddar. "We believe it is the responsibility of companies like ours to take steps to close this gap."
Adds Mr M H Dalmia, Chairman of the Board at Artech India: "Being a company with 60% of women employees, Artech is especially sensitive to women's issues and empowering women is one of its goals. The partnership between Artech and Banasthali, two women centric organizations, would go a long way towards the achievement of these goals."
The IT Centre at Banasthali is envisaged to be better than any other IT facility in India and comparable to the best in the world. It would train women in all branches of IT, hardware, software and communication. It would also provide research and development facilities. Blending theoretical knowledge with practical expertise, the IT Centre will endeavour to engender an entrepreneurial attitude in its students.
