-- NDS customers lead the way in enhancing the TV user experience
-- NDS Bangalore R&D Centre provides core technologies for Indian digital pay-TV services
NDS, the leading provider of technology solutions for digital pay-TV, today announced that the company is increasing its presence in India with the opening of a dedicated sales and support operation in Mumbai.
Commenting in Mumbai, Dr. Abe Peled, Chairman and CEO of NDS Group plc said, "NDS has had a research and development facility in Bangalore for over five years, which has grown to nearly 600 employees. NDS Bangalore is pivotal in our ability to roll out state-of-the-art technologies, such as advanced middleware solutions, digital video recorders (DVR) and interactive TV applications, to some of the world's largest broadcasters. The opening of the NDS Mumbai office, is in recognition that the Indian market itself is ready for the wide-scale deployment of digital pay-TV."
NDS end-to-end systems currently support the Tata Sky direct to home (DTH) service and Hathway Cable and Datacom digital cable TV operations.
Tata Sky, the 80:20 joint venture between Tata and News Corporation's STAR, launched a Ku-band DTH service across India in August 2006. NDS end-to-end systems are deployed by Tata Sky to offer an unprecedented range of digital and interactive TV services that give their subscribers greater choice, control and convenience. The NDS systems deployed include NDS VideoGuard(R) conditional access solution (CAS), MediaHighway(TM) middleware, and a bouquet of interactive TV applications including the electronic programme guide (EPG) for viewer navigation. One of the fastest-growing pay-TV services in all of Asia, Tata Sky now has over 250,000 subscribers.
Hathway Cable and Datacom selected NDS end-to-end systems in 2003 to power their digital cable operations. NDS provided a customized electronic programme guide for the service. Hathway has become the most successful Multiple System Operator (MSO) in rolling out digital cable TV services in India. Now reaching two million viewers, Hathway is one of the largest MSOs in the country. Hathway is the leader in digital cable TV services in the cities of Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Overall, Hathway provides quality cable TV services in 13 cities across India with fibre optic backbone deployed across the networks and state-of-the-art distribution infrastructure.
Indian cable operators are preparing for the imminent deadline by which time they are required to implement conditional access, which will be a major milestone for the cable TV market. The government has issued notification that the three metropolitan areas of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata must be fully "CAS delivered" by 31 December, 2006. The High Court of Delhi stipulated that from 31 December, 2006, "it shall be mandatory for every cable operator to transmit or re-transmit programmes of every pay channel through an addressable system in areas notified by the government."
For the past 15 years, NDS VideoGuard(R) CAS has established an unparalleled worldwide reputation in secure pay-TV delivery. VideoGuard is the world's most deployed conditional access technology (CAS) and is active in 66.6 million smart cards, on 42 TV platforms, in 25 countries, with services broadcast in 15 languages.
