The 2nd Lipton Bangalore International Marathon, earlier announced to be held on 14th May 2006, is now scheduled to take place in September 2006. The postponement is based on numerous requests from runners asking that the marathon be scheduled during a cooler season.
Says Darshan M, Director Sales & Marketing, Crossover Sports Private Ltd. "Since the initial announcement, we have received numerous calls and mails from runners across India requesting a change in dates of the Marathon. Many slow runners had faced the brunt of the summers last year. We did contemplate starting early but decided to change the dates as per the wish of the participants."
The 1st Lipton Bangalore International Marathon held in 15th May, 2005 witnessed over 23000 participants. This year at least 35,000 pairs of feet are expected to flood the streets of Bangalore. Adds Darshan M, "The marathon is now scheduled for the cooler month of September post the summer and the monsoon. This will also allow school children, many of whom go out of town during the summer break in May, to participate in Bangalore's biggest community sports event".
"We can start the full and Half Marathons early, but most of the participants, the fun runners, who run for a healthy tomorrow and for the city, will face the heat as the Celebration Run begins only at 9.00 am, so it was advisable to change the dates to everyone's convenience" said Neeraj Verma, Director Operations at Crossover Sports Private Limited.
The title sponsor Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL) is committed to ensure that every participant has a great time at the Marathon and thus was very happy with the decision.
To add, says Mr. Satyanarayana, secretary of Karnataka Athletic Association, "With the marathon postponed we will now have all our resources to concentrate on the upcoming Asian Grand Prix in May".
