Renuka calls for single window clearance in States and regional plans for tourism development
New Delhi: September 1, 2004

Smt. Renuka Chowdhury, Minister of State for Tourism, today called upon the North Indian States to formulate tourism development plan to have better coordination at regional level. Inaugurating a conference on integrated tourism development in North India organised by PHDCCI here today, Ms. Chowdhury said that tourism, has great economic potential. It can help in employment generation and social development. States should come forward to exploit the potential with joint efforts.

Ms. Chowdhury said that the Central government on its part had taken several initiatives recently for the promotion of tourism. She had written to Urban Development Ministry to allot land and allow land use on liberal terms if it is being used for tourism purposes and for providing budget hotels for tourists. She had also urged the Surface Transport Ministry to provide better linkages to the tourism destinations and development of ports and jetties to facilitate landing of tourism cruise. Home Ministry had been approached to open up more destinations and consider liberal permit to visit tourism destinations in North-East which still require prior permission.

Ms. Chowdhury said that it was the time that States should take up cleanliness of tourism destination on priority to attract greater number of foreign tourists and train all people related with the tourism and hospitality area to be more friendly with tourists.

The meeting was attended by the Tourism Ministers of Delhi, Rajasthan, J & K, Madhya Pradesh and senior officials of the UP Government participated in the meeting. PHDCCI on the occasion proposed setting up Regional Tourism Councils under the stewardship of the Central Government for joint marketing and promotion of tourism in North India. The President of the Chamber, Mr. Ravi Wig also suggested combined tourist circuits to facilitate the tourist movement across the region.
