NCERT history reference books for teachers sent out for distribution
New Delhi: September 1, 2004

The NCERT has now mounted a massive effort to make available pre-2000 history textbooks to teachers of all schools following Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus as per the decision of the Executive Committee on July 19, 2004. The publication of these books is complete and the distribution work is well underway with active support from sister organisations such as CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Sangathan (NVS) through their organisational network. The Executive Committee had decided to make these books available to teachers as reference material within six weeks. While the publication work was complete on time, the distribution aspect suffered a minor setback due to nationwide truckers' strike. Despite this crunch, NCERT is hopeful achieving its target of reaching out these books to the schools in the next couple of days.

The KVS has been supplied 1,730 copies in English and 2,600 copies in Hindi for Classes VIth to VIIth and 570 copies in English and 850 copies for Hindi for Classes XIth and XIIth on 18th and 19th of august. Similarly NVS has been supplied 1600 copies in English and 550 copies in Hindi for Classes VIth to VIIIth and 850 copies in English and 450 copies in Hindi for Classes XIth and XIIth on 16th of August and 19th of August.

The Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi has been supplied the books for Classes XIth and XIIth on 26th of August. The NCERT supplied 850 copies of these books in English for Classes XIth and XIIth for Arunachal Pradesh. These were sent on 26th of August to the office of the Resident Commissioner, Arunachal Pradesh. Books meant for schools in Andaman & Nicobar Island were lifted by the Resident Commissioner on 31st of August.

The CBSE has been supplied 22,000 copies in English and 1,500 copies in Hindi for Classes VI to VIII and 8,800 copies in English and 300 copies in Hindi for Classes Xith and XIIth on 19th of August, 20th of August, 26th of August and 31st of August.

Meanwhile the NCERT has posted the advisory on various textbooks on its webside : www.ncert.nic.in since August 24, 2004. The same is also available on the CBSE webside: www.cbse.nic.in. The advisory has also been e-mailed to about 2,000 schools by CBSE.
