Kharif crops sowing in progress
New Delhi: September 1, 2004

The sowings of several crops for the kharif season in progress in various parts of the country. This emerged at the latest meeting of the Crop Weather Watch Group of the Agriculture Ministry held here. The meeting was informed that the week ending last Sunday witnessed rainfall activity over west Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and Uttaranchal & West Uttar Pradesh during 23rd to 26th August. During the week rainfall activity remained subdued over south peninsula. In a dramatic recovery, weather situation improved from -15% on July month end to -6% by August end. This had helped in intensification of kharif crops sowing.

The cumulative seasonal rainfall was normal in 28 and deficient in 8 meteorological sub-divisions. For the country as a whole, the rainfall was below normal by 6 per cent. The forecast valid up to 1st September morning is that rain/thundershowers are likely at many places over northeastern States, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Bihar and at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Kerala remaining parts of the country like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka where it will be isolated. The outlook for the subsequent 48 hours is that moderate rainfall activity may increase over east-central India, Gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand. No Significant change in the rest regions of the country.

Sowing of Kharif crops is continuing in various parts of the country.

Sowing of pulses in progress in several parts of the country. Total Kharif pulses are covered in 118.7 lakh hectares against the normal are of 128.5 lakh hectares. According to Directorate of Pulses Development, Bhopal, Arhar is covered in 33. 8 lakh hectares, Urd in 20.3 lakh hectares and Moong in 23.2 lakh hectares.

Normal area under rice is about 406 lakh hectares. The area coverage of rice so far is reported to be about 302.96 lakh hectares (l ha) compared to 323.53 lakh hectares last year in the corresponding period. Rice sowing is in progress in all the States excepting Punjab.

Normal area under cotton is about 88 lakh hectares. Cotton is sown in 81.54 l ha compared to 73.85 l ha. Cotton sowing is over in most of the States except Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Sowing coarse cereals is in progress in all the States. The total area coverage under coarse cereals is 200.84 l ha as compared to 233.59 l ha during last year in the corresponding period. The total area under Bajra is 74.02 l ha as compared to 101.18 l ha last year. Jowar is covered in 37.62 l ha as compared to 41.94 l ha in the corresponding period of the previous year. Maize is covered in 68.46 lakh hectares as compared to 68.38 l ha during last year in the corresponding period.

As on the 27th of this month, total water storage in the 71 important reservoirs monitored by the Central Water Commission was 61 per cent of the full reservoir level (FRL) of 131.28 billion cubic meters. This was 126 per cent of the last year's storage and 101 per cent of the average of the last ten years. There are 26 projects having storage more than 80 per cent, 25 projects have storage between 50 to 80 per cent, eight projects having storage more than 30 per cent and up to 50 per cent and remaining 12 projects are having storage up to 30 per cent of designed live storage only.
