Shankar Sinh Vaghela takes over as Union Textiles Minister
New Delhi: May 24, 2004

Shri Shankar Singh Vaghela took over as the Union Minister of Textiles here today. On assuming charge of the portfolio, Shri Vaghela interacted with the Textiles Secretary Shri S. B. Mohapatra and other senior officials, who briefed him about the functions and allocation of the Ministry.

Later speaking to press persons, Shri Shankar Singh Vaghela said that the employment generation would be the top priority of his ministry and added that the policies of the ministry would be directed towards ensuring that.

An Agriculturist and Educationist, Shri Vaghela was first elected to 6th Lok Sabha during 1977. Subsequently he was elected to 9th Lok Sabha during 1989; 10th Lok Sabha during 1991; 13th Lok Sabha during 1999. He was elected to 14th Lok Sabha from Kapadganj in Gujarat in 2004. Shri Vaghela was Chief Minister of Gujarat during 1996-97.

A veteran parliamentarian, Shri Vaghela is a trustee of a number of socio-religious and educational institutes and had been member of Parliamentary Committee on Petroleum and Chemicals and also member of Committee on Estimates.
