Shivraj V. Patil takes over as Union Home Minister
New Delhi: May 24, 2004

Shri Shivraj V. Patil assumed the charge of Union Home Minister in the North-Block office of the MHA, here today. Sixty-nine year old, Shri Patil was the Speaker in the 10th Lok Sabha while representing the Latur constituency in Maharashtra during his 4th term as Member of Parliament. He represented the Latur Constituency in the Lok Sabha having been re-elected in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

Shri Shivraj Patil was born at Chakur in Latur District of Maharashtra on October 12, 1935 and was educated at Osmania University and Bombay University. After graduating in Science he completed LLM and practiced Law.

Shri Patil has been in public life for over four decades being first elected to the Latur Municipality as its President in 1967. He became a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1972 and presided over the House as its speaker from 1978 to 1979. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 and was appointed a Union Minister of State for Defence in the same year. During his distinguished career as Minister in the Union Council of Ministers he held a number of portfolios including commerce, Science & Technology, Atomic Energy and Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Shri Patil is a widely travelled man having been to 41 countries.
