Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar takes over as Petroleum Minister - Shri Elangovan assumes charge as Minister Of State For Petroleum & Natural Gas
New Delhi: May 24, 2004

Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar has taken over as new Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Panchayati Raj here today. He was accompanied by Shri E.V.K.S. Elangovan who assumed charge as Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas in the new Government. The two Ministers were briefed by senior officers of the Ministry on the petroleum sector in general and the issues concerning the Ministry in particular. They also met other officials of the Petroleum Ministry.

Shri Aiyar was elected to the Lok Sabha for third time on Congress ticket from Mayiladuturai in Tamil Nadu. He was first elected to the 10th Lok Sabha in 1991 and to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999. Born on 10th April 1941, Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar has held important assignments as Member of Parliamentary Committees and also in his party. He has written several books and has been an eminent columnist & contributor to various newspapers and periodicals in India and abroad. Books written by him include “Remembering Rajiv”, “One year in Parliament”, “Pakistan Papers”, etc. Shri Aiyar has been in the Indian Foreign Service during 1963-89.
