Lalu Prasad takes over as New Railway Minister
New Delhi: May 24, 2004

Shri Lalu Prasad took over as the new Minister of Railways here today.

Immediately after assumption of office, he told the Media persons that safety would receive his top priority and there would be no compromise on safety, security, punctuality and cleanliness. The accident cases would be investigated thoroughly and officials responsible for any let up punished severely. He further said that all out efforts would be made to improve rail services to the nation, while maintaining that the Indian Railways were the bulk mode of transportation for the common man. He announced that he would function as the Railway Minister of India and would not work especially for any particular region or areas. All areas or regions would get his undivided attention. He announced that the use of plastic cups or glasses would be banned and in lieu thereof, bio-degradable earthen pot kulhar would be used to generate employment for the potters in the country and to protect environment.

Later, Chairman and Members of the Railway Board and other senior officials in the Ministry of Railways met the Minister and apprised him of the current status of Indian Railways, the projects pending and priority areas that needed attention of the new Government.
