Letter to Editor - Rights of Women in J & K
New Delhi: March 5, 2004

Unanimous passing of bill by J&K assembly to snatch residential status of J&K women after their marrying outside the state is sex-bias against rights of women of this Indian state. New bill will not allow residential status to even those women of the state who wish to settle down in J&K after marrying with a person from outside the state.

Such a discriminatory bill would not have been passed by a male-dominated legislature if women in India would have not been denied their legitimate right of one-third reservation in legislature. Interestingly, neighbouring Islamic country Pakistan has already provided reservation to women in legislature. Politicians right from the day of independence have erred in giving special status to the state under article 370 of the Indian constitution, a move unfortunately continued in BJP regime due to various compulsions including pressure of its allies in the Union Government.
