Railway crossings on National Highways
New Delhi: March 19, 2004

Indian Railways have taken up works of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) at 61 rail crossings on National Highways across the country on cost-sharing basis with the National Highway Authority of India. In addition, works of ROBs and RUBs at 41 rail crossings have been taken up on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. The total number of ROBs and RUBs taken up at the National Highways is 104.

The Railways have 572 level crossings on the National Highways all over the country. Out of these, 265 level crossings are having Train Vehicle Units (TVUs) more than one lakh.

Construction of ROBs and RUBs is undertaken in lieu of busy level crossings having TVUs more than one lakh on cost sharing basis by the Railways with State Governments and Road Authorities on the basis of a proposal mooted by the State Governments concerned or the Road Authorities agreeing to share the cost. It is also to accept other standard stipulations like closure of level crossings on commissioning of ROBs and RUBs, advance action for land acquisition, inclusion of work in respective State Government’s and Road Authority’s Annual Plan, and taking up of work on approaches simultaneously.
