More Telemetry networks in seismic zone
New Delhi: March 19, 2004

More telemetry networks are to come up in various seismically active zones of the country including the North-Eastern region. The India Meteorological Department is already operating a 16 station V. SAT based telemetry system around Delhi for monitoring local seismic activity. Similar such systems are planned to be set up in highly earthquake prone areas. As per the seismic zoning map of the country, published by the Bureau of Indian Standards, Zone-V is considered to be the most severe and Zone I , the least severe areas.

Delhi, Muzaffarpur and its adjoining districts etc. fall under highly active seismic Zone of the country. Muzaffarpur and its adjoining areas fall under seismic zone V and IV category. Major parts of Orissa fall under II and III while Ahmedabad falls under III. The Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat falls under highly vulnerable zone of V, while other parts of the state fall under III and IV.

The IMD conducted a seismic survey of Rajkot and neighbouring areas during Dec. 2002 and April 2003. The preliminary conclusion of the survey indicated that the disturbances around Rajkot were due to readjustment of the crustal stress subsequent to the earthquake of January 2001.

There is no scientific technique available anywhere in the world to forecast the occurrence of earthquakes with reasonable degree of accuracy in place, time and magnitude. However damages caused by earthquakes to human lives and property can be reduced substantially with disaster preparedness and following quake resistant building guidelines, especially of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
