Letter to Editor - Bata Sale Gimmick?
New Delhi: March 10, 2004

Recently I was attracted by a big banner with words ‘SALE 50-PERCENT’ printed in extra large size at Bata show-room near Odeon in New Delhi. I was surprised to be billed for a pair of chappals for full price. When I questioned the billing person about ‘SALE’ banner, he pointed towards a small shelf displaying some shoes/ chappals available at discounted ‘SALE’ price. Otherwise majority of stock was only with normal price-tags. On further query, my attention was drawn to some unreadable words ‘conditions apply’ mentioned in the banner in smallest possible font-size!

It was for the first time that I noticed such tactics that too by a renowned company Bata. Any hoarding, banner or other publicity towards ‘SALE’ should be allowed only when complete stock inside the show-room may be available at discounted price.
