Inflation Rate falls while Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers remains stationary
New Delhi: May 31, 2004

The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed a fall of 1.26 percentage points during April 2004. It went down from 3.49 % in March 2004 to 2.23% in April 2004. In April 2003 the inflation rate was 5.12 %.

The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for April, 2004 (base 1982-100) remained stationary to stand at 504 (five hundred & four) points. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period last year had increased by six points.

The Rise/Fall in index varied from centre to centre. In 34 centres, the index increased between 1 to 11 points and in 8 centres it remained constant whereas in another 28 centres it recorded a decrease of 1 to 10 points when compared to the previous month.

During the month, Labac-Silchar centre experienced the maximum increase of 11 points. The increase is mainly due to rise in prices of Rice, Fresh Fish, Vegetables, Pan Leaf etc. Srinagar and Thiruvananthapuram centres experienced the maximum decrease of 10 points each. The decrease in index at Srinagar centre was mainly due to the fall in prices of Rice, Wheat, Vegetables and Fruits etc. whereas in Thiruvananthapuram the decline was due to fall in prices of Rice, Fresh Fish, Dry Fish, Dry Chillies, Pan Leaf etc. The index remained stationery in 8 centres viz. Tiruchirapally, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Darjeeling, Jabalpur, Vadodra, Noamundi and Amritsar.

The index in respect of six main centres for April 2004 stood at the following level: -

1. Ahmedabad - 496
2. Bangalore - 492
3. Kolkata - 558
4. Chennai - 534
5. Delhi - 584
6. Mumbai - 597
