IBM points out 3,000 mining rule violations in 2003-04
New Delhi: June 1, 2004

Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), Nagpur, a subordinate organisation of the Department of Mines is engaged in the promotion, conservation and scientific development of mineral resources in the country except coal, petroleum & natural gas, atomic minerals and minor minerals. During the year 2003-04, IBM pointed out nearly 3,000 violations of Mineral Conservation and Development Rules 1988 (MCDR) in respect of 1,281 mines. It rectified fully 1,895 cases of violation. It launched 134 prosecution cases in various courts, out of which, 16 cases were decided and 22 cases were compounded. During the year, orders for suspension of mining operations were issued to 3 mines and suspension orders of two mines were revoked.

IBM, during the period, competed 69 ore dressing investigations, 50,871 chemical analysis, 2,352 mineralogical examinations and 32 implant studies. It also functions as the Data Bank of Mines and Minerals and publishes statistical periodicals. It brings out technical publications/monographs on individual mineral commodities and bulletins of topical interest.

Recently two more functions have been assigned to IBM viz. approval of mine closure plans and promoting & monitoring community development activities in the mining areas. The organisation provides technical consultancy services to the mining industry for geological appraisal of mineral resources and preparation of feasibility reports of mining projects, including beneficiation plants.
