Strides by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works
New Delhi: June 8, 2004

The Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) has manufactured 48 state-of-the-art microprocessor based 6000 horse power high speed A.C. 3-phase electric locomotives indigenously under a technology transfer from M/s ABB Transportation System, Switzerland.

Under an agreement in July 1993, 11 high speed passenger and 22 freight locomotives with a package of transfer of technology for indigenous manufacture of such locomotives at the CLW were imported. These electric locos are now being manufactured indigenously.

Out of the 22 freight locomotives, six were received in fully assembled condition and 16 in semi knocked down and completely knocked down condition for assembly at the CLW. The ABB technology is now fully assimilated.

Besides, CLW built a prototype 3-phase high axle load WAG-9H class freight locomotive in June 2000 as well as a passenger variant on the WAG-9 platform, designated WAP-7.

Established in 1948, CLW as the first Production Unit of the Indian Railways, commenced manufacture of steam locomotives in 1950, electric locomotives in 1961 and diesel locomotives in 1967-68. Since 1993, the product mix has been exclusively electric locomotives.

At present, the CLW has the annual capacity of 150 electric locomotives.
