Bhutan Foreign Minister calls on Indian Finance Minister
New Delhi: June 8, 2004

India will continue to assist Bhutan in her planned economic and social development. This was stated by Finance Minister, Shri P. Chidambaram at a meeting with Foreign Minister of Bhutan Mr. Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, here today. Mr. Wangchuk said that India’s prosperity has an impact on the economies of the countries of the region and expressed his gratitude for India’s support to Bhutan’s socio-economic growth.

While India and Bhutan have already developed synergy in the power sector, the Finance Minister assured Bhutan’s Foreign Minister of India’s continued support to augment hydro-power generation in Bhutan. With cooperation in the Hydro Power Sector between the two countries, the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Plant will come on stream in March 2006. Mr. Wangchuk conveyed to FM the best wishes of His Majesty, the King of Bhutan for the very challenging task ahead. He also extended an invitation to Shri P. Chidambaram to visit Bhutan.
