Village Public Telephones in India
New Delhi: July 14, 2004

Lok Sabha

A total of 509850 Village Public Telephones (VPTs) have been provided by BSNL in the country as on 31st May, 2004. Stating this in a written reply to a question by Shri Virendra Kumar and Shri Dushyant Singh in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Shakeel Ahmad informed the members that BSNL’s target for the Tenth Five Year Plan is to provide VPTs to 80828 villages.

The Minister further informed that following steps have been taken to achieve the target which are: (i) Wireless in Local Loop system is being deployed in large quantity to provide VPTs and (ii) remote and isolated villages, which cannot be covered by any terrestrial media are planned to be covered by satellite technology. BSNL has planned to cover the remaining villages of its share by 31st March 2006, subject to availability of financial support from the Government, Dr. Shakeel Ahmad added.
