Pursuant to the announcement on 'Sagar Mala' made by the then Prime Minister on 15th August, 2003, an outline of the Programme was prepared and in anticipation of Government approval therefore, an outlay of Rs.24.48 crore was provided in Interim Budget for 2004-05 for activities to be taken up under the Programme and the proposal for approval of the Competent Authority to the outline of the Programme could not be processed to its finality. The outlay of Rs. 24.48 crore for the Programme has been retained in the Main Budget 2004-05.

Schemes relating to domestic waterways were included in the outline of the Programme. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are to be prepared after approval of the outline of the Programme, by the Competent Authority.

This information was given in the Rajya Sabha today in a written reply by the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Shri T.R.Baalu.
