Railway claims cases pending on April 30, 2004
New Delhi: July 14, 2004

Claims cases relating to rail accident compensation, theft of parcels and goods, and refund of tickets, pending on April 30, 2004, were 247, 6712 and 23582 respectively.

During the last three years, 324 cases relating to compensation to victims of rail accidents were settled and 295 claims cases received.

Similarly, cases settled for theft of parcels and goods were 16076. A total of 22828 such cases were received.

As for refund of rail tickets, 991182 claims were settled and 1004958 cases received.

In accident related cases, passengers can now file claims for compensation at the originating station, or destination station or where the ticket was purchased or the place of residence as against the earlier system of only at the place of occurrence of accident.

Adjournments of hearing in the Railway Claims Tribunal have been restricted to a maximum of three to expedite compensation cases. Added to this, the Tribunal is required to pass final orders within 21 days of final hearing.

The Registrars of the Tribunal have been empowered to attest the affidavits as against the earlier system of attestation by the Notary Public, for the convenience of claimants.

The Registrar or Additional Registrar of the Tribunal monitors and sees that the payment of compensation award is made expeditiously to the claimants by the Railway Administration.
