Passenger Safety Cess on Rail Tickets
New Delhi: July 15, 2004

The Safety Surcharge on tickets was introduced from October 1, 2001.

Rs. 1,538.94 crores has been collected as Safety Surcharge upto March 31, 2004. This surcharge is being appropriated to Special Railway Safety Fund, which is being utilized to fund the works of renewals and replacements of safety related assets in a time bound manner.

There have been 140 consequential train accidents from October 1, 2001 to March 31, 2002. Further, there have been 351 consequential train accidents in the year 2002-2003 and 325 (provisional figure) in the year 2003-04, the lowest ever figure.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri R. Velu in a written reply to a question from Shri Milind Deora in the Lok Sabha today.
