Public Telephone Booths in India

A total of 772937 Public Telephone Booths were provided during the Ninth Five Year Plan. State/UT wise, the number of Public Telephone Booths in Andaman & Nicobar Islands is 459, Andhra Pradesh 79930, Arunachal Pradesh 530, Assam 8820, Bihar 24111, Chhattisgarh 5005, Daman 220, Diu 66, Dadra & Nagar Haveli 207, Gujarat 20036, Goa 1820, Haryana 14285, Himachal Pradesh 4443, Jammu & Kashmir 6941, Jharkhand 6560, Karnataka 45774, Kerala 30188, Lakshadweep 20, Madhya Pradesh 43258, Maharashtra (including Mumbai) 177799, Meghalaya 1105, Mizoram 630, Manipur 630, Nagaland 848, Orissa 15167, Punjab (including Chandigarh) 22457, Pondicherry 1387, Rajasthan 28076, Sikkim 250, Tamilnadu (including Chennai) 90171, Tripura 1266, Uttaranchal 4453, Uttar Pradesh 69409, West Bengal (including Kolkata) 44120 and Delhi 22550.

Giving this information in a written reply to a question by Smt. Minati Sen in the Lok Sabha today, the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Shakeel Ahmad informed the Members that PCOs are allotted liberally to all applicants above 18 years of age as per their registration subject to technical feasibility. Hence, no target has been fixed for installation of PCOs for the Tenth Five Year Plan. The number of PCOs to be installed during the said period depends on the demand, he added.
