Non-Conventional Energy projects in Karnataka
New Delhi: July 14, 2004

Shri Vilas Muttemwar, Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources (independent charge) informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply today that his Ministry is supporting grid interactive renewable power projects based on wind, solar, biomass and small hydro in the country, including Karnataka. A total installed capacity of 553.36 MW, including 209.10 MW from wind, 203.38 MW from small hydro, 139.88 MW from biomass and 1 MW from urban & industrial wastes has been set up in Karnataka as on 31-3-2004. An estimated 1345 million units of electricity were generated from grid interactive renewable power projects in Karnataka during 2003-04. In addition, projects aggregating to 249.54 MW are under various stages of implementation in the State.

In reply to another question Shri Muttemwar informed the House that the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) is implementing a remote village electrification programme with the aim to electrify all remote census villages through non-conventional energy sources. In Karnataka, 21 remote villages have been identified for electrification through non-conventional energy sources under this programme. During 2004-05 itself, 5 villages and 8 hamlets are proposed to be electrified in the State. MNES is providing Central Financial Assistance upto 90% of the cost of the projects under the remote village electrification programme, with specific benchmarks linked with technologies adopted for electrification, throughout the country, including Karnataka.
