Mobile Phone Service in India
New Delhi: July 14, 2004

Lok Sabha

569 District Head Quarters out of total 593 District Head Quarters in the country have been provided with Cellular Mobile Service as on 30th June, 2004. The remaining districts mostly fall within the buffer zone and the coverage in these districts has also been planned by the various operators, however, no timeframe for coverage of mobile service in remaining part of the country can be specified at this stage. This was stated by the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Shakeel Ahmad in a written reply to a question by Shri Ramdas Bandu Athawale, Shri D.P. Saroj and Shri Bir Singh Mahato in the Lok Sabha today.

The Minister informed the House that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), as a licensor, has granted licences to Public Sector Undertakings namely, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and various other private operators to provide mobile services in the whole of the country. As such mobile services have been approved for all the districts in the country except those falling the buffer zone i.e. within 10 km. of international borders.

Dr. Ahmad further stated that the allocation of funds and desired equipment for the further expansion of mobile services entirely depend on the business plan of the Service Providers.
