Sowing of Kharif crops

Sowing of Kharif crops is in progress in various parts of the country.
Normal area under rice is about 406 lakh hectares. Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Bihar are major rice growing States with normal areas of 58.5, 44.4, 42.3, 37.2 and 34.6 lakh hectares respectively. Rice sowing has picked up in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Tamil Nadu. The area coverage is reported to be 89.9 lakh hectares compared to 92.3 lakh hectares during last year in the corresponding period. Punjab has reported 22 lakh hectares as compared to 19.8 lakh hectares during last year in the corresponding period. Orissa has reported 13.6 lakh hectares, which is more than the last year’s coverage in the corresponding period. Haryana has reported 5.6 lakh hectares as compared to 6.2 lakh hectares during last year in the corresponding period.
Normal area under cotton is about 88 lakh hectares. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh are major cotton producing States with respective normal areas of 31.5, 16.4, 10.5, 5.7, 5.3, 5.2, 5.8 and 5.1 lakh hectares. Area coverage reported so far is 44 lakh hectares against 37.7 lakh hectares in the corresponding period last year. Punjab has reported 5.5 lakh hectares as compared to 4.5 lakh hectares in the corresponding period last year. Area coverage so far in Haryana is 6.8 lakh hectares as compared to 5.3 lakh hectares last year.
Normal area under Kharif coarse cereals is about 231 lakh hectares. The total area under jowar is 14.8 lakh hectares as compared to 22.7 lakh hectares during the corresponding period of the previous year. Karnataka has reported 3.4 lakh hectares as compared to 1.5 lakh hectares last year in the corresponding period. Madhya Pradesh has reported 1.98 lakh hectares against 5.92 lakh hectares last year, Maharashtra 5.99 lakh hectares against 8.05 lakh hectares last year and Rajasthan 0.84 lakh hectares against 3.18 lakh hectares last year. Maize sowing has started in all the states. The area coverage is 41.4 lakh hectares as compared to 45.3 lakh hectares during last year in the corresponding period. Karnataka has reported 6.4 lakh hectares as compared to 1.3 lakh hectares during last year in the corresponding period. Rajasthan has reported 5.28 lakh hectares against 7.37 lakh hectares last year. Area covered this year in the case of bajra is 27.6 lakh hectares against 40.1 lakh hectares last year in the corresponding period. In Rajasthan, the area sown is 7.84 lakh hectares against 24.70 lakh hectares sown last year.
Normal area under sugarcane is about 43 lakh hectares. Uttar Pradesh Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh are major sugarcane producing States with respective normal areas of 19.5, 5.9, 4, 3.2 and 2.2 lakh hectares. Sowing of sugarcane is almost complete. Area coverage so far this year is about 37.3 lakh hectares as compared to 45 lakh hectares covered in the corresponding period last year.
Normal area under jute is 8.5 lakh hectares. West Bengal is a major jute producing State with a normal area of 6.3 lakh hectares. Sowing of jute is almost complete. Area reported for jute so far is about 7 lakh hectares as compared to 8.2 lakh hectares in the corresponding period last year. About 5 lakh hectares has been covered so far in West Bengal against 6.2 lakh hectares covered last year during the corresponding period. Normal area under Mesta is 1.85 lakh hectares. Area covered under Mesta so far is about 1.38 lakh hectares as against 1.43 lakh hectares last year..
Kharif oilseeds account for nearly 65% of total oilseeds area and about 60% of total oilseeds production in the country. The normal area under total Kharif oilseeds is 154 lakh hectares. Important Kharif oilseeds are groundnut, soyabean, sesamum, sunflower, niger and castor with respective normal areas of 56.9, 62.9, 16.7, 4, 4.7 and 8.6 lakh hectares. As on the 9th of this month, area sown under groundnut was 28.69 lakh hectares against last year’s coverage of 25.12 lakh hectares. Area sown under sunflower was 4.46 lakh hectares as against 0.74 lakh hectares covered in the corresponding period last year. Reported area under sesamum was 6.66 lakh hectares against last year’s coverage of 6.12 lakh hectares. Area coverage under soyabean was 33.80 lakh hectares as against 39.15 lakh hectares during the corresponding period of the previous year. Total Kharif oilseeds sown was 74.85 lakh hectares as against last year’s coverage of 73.15 lakh hectares during the corresponding period.
Kharif pulses account for 48% of total pulses area and about 37% of total annual production of pulses in the country. Area coverage so far is 19.4 lakh hectares against 35 lakh hectares during last year in the corresponding period. Major Tur producing States are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat with respective normal areas of 10.5, 4.5, 4.1, 5.2 and 3.4 lakh hectares. The sowing of Kharif pulses has commenced in Andhra Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, J & K and Nagaland. The area covered so far under Tur is 6.36 lakh hectares against 10.30 lakh hectares last year.
As on the ninth of this month, total water storage in the 71 important reservoirs monitored by the Central Water Commission was 20% of the full reservoir level (FRL) of 131.28 billion cubic meters. This is 132% of the last year’s level and 89% of last 10 years’ average. There are six reservoirs, which do not have utilizable water. They are Sriramsagar and Somasila in Andhra Pradesh, Gandhi Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, Jayakwadi and Bhima in Maharashtra and Ramganga in Uttar Pradesh.
