Indian Coal Imports
New Delhi: July 14, 2004

Rajya Sabha

The demand-supply gap of coal in the country is met through imports. Primarily coal is imported by Steel and Allied industries, thermal power stations and cement units. All these sectors imported nearly 21.50 million tonnes of coal during the year 2003-04.

Import of coal is under Open General Licence (OGL) of the import policy of the Government and consumers are free to import coal as per their requirement. Imports are being resorted to bridge partly the gap between demand and supply and for blending to improve the quality of coal.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
