Golden Quadrilateral Project

New Delhi: July 15, 2004

The Golden Quadrilateral (GQ) component of National Highways Development Project (NHDP) consists of 4/6 laning of the National Highways connecting the four major metropolitan cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.The length of roads covered under GQ is 5846 kms. Length of roads 4/6 laned under GQ during the last three years up to March 2004 is 1845 km. Substantial completion of the project is targeted by December, 2004. The entire project is likely to be completed in 2005 except Allahabad bypass.The financial plan of NHDP Phase I and other projects approved by Government of India is Rs.30,300 crore (at 1999 prices) which includes Rs.25,055 crore for the GQ from following sources:

(i)

Cess/Market Borrowings

15,557.00 crore

(ii)

External Assistance

-

7,450.00 crore

(iii)

Share of Private Sector

-

2,048.00 crore

The expenditure incurred so far (upto June 2004) on GQ projects is Rs.17,407.31 crore. Additional requirement of funds for completion of GQ is expected to be met within approved allocation of funds. This information was given in the Rajya Sabha today in a written reply by the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Shri K.H. Muniyappa.
