German Foreign Minister calls on Indian Prime Minister
New Delhi: July 14, 2004

The Deputy Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Germany, H.E. Mr. Joschka Fischer, called on the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, today. Both sides expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation. Mr. Fischer stated that India is a rising star both in economic and political terms and, therefore, he attaches great importance to Indo-German relations. He said that the proposed visit of Chancellor Gerhard Schroder to India, scheduled for October 2004, would provide yet another opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations.

Dr. Manmohan Singh noted that the economic relations between the two countries do not as yet match the potential. He stressed that there was much greater scope for increased investment and trade. The Prime Minister and the German Minister discussed a range of issues including developments in Southern Asia and the Middle East, including Iraq. Both sides agreed that the need of the hour in Iraq is for the international community to focus on achieving political normalisation and economic reconstruction. The Prime Minister affirmed India’s intention to continue the on-going dialogue with Pakistan and to resolve all issues in a peaceful manner through dialogue while adopting a practical approach.
