New Delhi: July 15, 2004

The employment growth rate in the organised manufacturing sector in the country showed a negative trend during the last three years. Stating this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, the Labour and Employment Minister Shri Sis Ram Ola said that estimated employment in the organised manufacturing sector went down from 66.2 lakh in 2000 to 62.2 lakh in 2002 showing a decline of 3.5%.

In reply to another related question, Shri Ola said that the estimated employment in public sector including Government, quasi-Government and local bodies was 191.38 lakh in 2001 and 187.73 lakh in 2002. In private sector, the estimated employment was 86.52 lakh in 2001 and 84.32 lakh in 2002.

In another reply, the Labour Minister said as per the last quinquennial survey conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation during 1999-2000, educated employed youth (with secondary and higher qualification in the age group of 15 years and above) was around 54.8 lakh. He said that as per the latest data available, the number of job seekers on the live register of employment exchanges as on 31st December 2002 was around 296.7 lakh. He said that being on live register does not mean that all of them are necessarily unemployed. Shri Ola said that the Government is targeting creation of 5 crore job opportunities during the 10th Plan. This would helped unemployed youth also, he added.
