The Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries under the administrative control of the Ministry of Coal and Mines had a manpower of 4,84,703 by March 2004. The manpower employed by Singareni Colleries Company Ltd. (SCCL), a company in joint venture with Andhra Pradesh Government was 94,052.

As per Tenth Plan document of Ministry of Coal & Mines, the projection of coal production in India by the end of Xth Plan i.e. 2006-07 is 405 million tonnes. Out of this, production by CIL and SCCL will be 350 million tonnes and 36.13 million tonnes respectively.

Requirement of manpower for the production of 350 million tonnes by CIL and its subsidiaries in 2006-07 has been projected as 4,44,200 by March 2007. Similarly requirement of manpower for projected production of 36.13 million tonnes in SCCL is 76,128. At present neither CIL nor SCCL envisage any addition in their overall manpower requirement during this period. However, there may be some future requirement for certain specified technical categories of workers.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
