Science and Technology key to progress - Message goes down on National Science Day
New Delhi: February 28, 2004

Science and Technology key to progress", awareness, on this was highlighted in schools and educational institutions to mark the National Science Day, today. Children and students thronged several scientific institutions thrown open across the country, on the occasion. It was on this day, Sir C.V. Raman made a discovery which is popularly called the - Raman Effect - and was awarded the Nobel prize. The day is observed as National Science Day and on the occasion, science popularization activities are taken up throughout the country. Incidentally, 2004 is also being observed as the "Year of Scientific Awareness".

At the main function organized by the Department of Science and Technology on the eve of the Day, awards instituted for science popularization were given away by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Dr. R. Chidambaram. National Awards for women’s development through the application of Science and Technology and National Bio-Science Awards for career development were also given away.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Chidambram said, science and technology alone can bring about greater economic progress and contribute to national development. For this, we should create a greater awareness of about science in the society and encourage scientific temper among children. Students should also be encouraged to take up science as career, he said.

The Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Prof. V.S. Ramamurthy said, science communication should be taken up in a mission mode. For the creation of a knowledge society, this is very important he said. He also spoke of initiatives being taken to provide a greater fillip to fundamental science. Without basic research, there cannot be technology development, he said.

The Chairman, All India Council for Technical Education Dr. R. Natarajan who delivered the Science Day lecture, said visible impact has been made in scientific awareness. Only countries which are scientifically and technologically advanced will be able to successfully meet the challenges in the new millennium, he said.
