Commerce Minister Calls For International Branding Of Indian Handicrafts - Indian Handicrafts And Gifts Fair, Carpet Expo Inaugurated
New Delhi: February 28, 2004

The Commerce Minister Shri Arun Jaitley has called for international branding of Indian handicrafts to increase its global marketability. He was speaking after inaugurating the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair - Spring 2004 - here today. An exhibition on jute products ‘Jute India’, ‘World Bamboo Expo’ and ‘India Carpet Expo’ are also being simultaneously held at the same venue. The World Bamboo Expo is being held to coincide with the 7th World Bamboo Congress currently being held in New Delhi. Shri Jaitley said, the Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair is a landmark initiative of the government and the industry as the handicrafts sector offers huge employment potential. He hoped that the exhibition will encourage entrepreneurs and craftspersons. The Commerce Minister said, this sector has left an impact and is growing consistently. The event which takes place twice a year showcases the best in Indian handicrafts and gift items and brings foreign buyers and domestic sellers on a single platform.

The Textiles Minister Shri Syed Shahnawaz Hussain who was present on the occasion inaugurated the India Carpet Expo 2004.Over 100 leading exporters from all over India and over 300 overseas visitors are expected to participate. The fair is expected to generate business of about Rs 150 Crore for the Indian handmade floor covering. Carpets in wool, silk, cotton and coir are on display. Manufacturers from crafts areas like Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur, Panipat and Kashmir are among those participating in the fair. Speaking on the occasion Shri Hussain said that the handmade carpet industry is very important for the Indian economy as it is providing livelihood to over 2.5 million artisans in rural areas besides earning over 600 million US Dollars in foreign exchange. He called upon the exporters to aggressively market the product as there is a huge market potential abroad. The Minister said, the export of handmade carpets and floor coverings has steadily increased reaching a level of about 533 million US Dollars in 2002-03.
