Storage capacity of reservoirs
New Delhi: August 16, 2004

At the end of Ninth Five Year Plan 4,525 large dams were constructed in the country to provide storage for meeting the requirements of irrigation, hydro power and for other purposes. The Central Water Commission is monitoring the status of storage of 71 important reservoirs. The overall storage in these 71 reservoirs as on 06.08.2004 was 39.28 billion cubic metre (BCM) which is 30 per cent of the total designed live storage capacity.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Water Resources, Shri Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
