Over 5 lakh persons with disabilities benefit through central funding of NGOs
New Delhi: August 16, 2004

The Central Government has provided Rs. 207.52 crore as grant-in-aid to various non-governmental organisation benefiting 5.43 lakh persons with disabilities under Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme during the last three years.

644 NGOs were assisted with Rs. 60.81 crore during 2001-02, 669 NGOs with Rs. 75.53 crore during 2002-03 and 657 NGOs with 71.05 crore in 2003-04. The highest number of 181 NGOs were assisted in Uttar Pradesh during the 3 years followed by 156 NGOs in Tamil Nadu and 148 NGOs in Wet Bengal. The NGOs were funded for implementing various projects under the Scheme.

This information was given by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Smt. Meira Kumar in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
