51st National Film Awards for Feature Film and Best Writing on Cinema announced
New Delhi: August 14, 2004

The Juries for National Awards for Feature Film and for Best Writing on Cinema have presented their recommendations to the Government today. The national awards which seek to recognize the excellence in all the fields of cinema in the country have been recommended separately for Feature Films and Best Writing on Cinema.

An eminent jury comprising 16 Members and one Chairperson Shri Basu Chatterjee deliberated over two weeks to finalize awards.

122 entries were considered for a National Awards this year. These films were in 13 different languages. 3 were in Assamese, 12 in Bengali, 1 in Bhojpuri, 10 in English, 1 in Garhwali, 27 in Hindi, 14in Kannada, 17 in Malayalam, 4 in Marathi, 1 in Oriya, 2 in Santhali, 17 in Tamil and 13 in Telugu. Debut films have been a significant part in this year's entries. As many as 47 films out of 122 entered in the competition were the first films of the Directors.

For National Awards on Best Writing on Cinema, 20 books in 7 different languages and 16 film critics in 5 different languages ere considered for the selection. The books were reviewed in Bengali, English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi and Tamil languages. The work of the film critics was considered in English, Hindi , Kannada, Assamese, and Telegu languages. An eminent jury consisting of Mrs. Aruna Anath Damle, Shri Kodalli Sivaram and under the Chairmanship of Shri K N T Sastry decided upon these awards and have also presented its recommendations.
