Safety on Konkan Railway
New Delhi: August 9, 2004

How technology could avert a serious accident on the Konkan Railway (KR) on August 6, 2004 can be seen when an inclinometer detected well in advance soil involvement on the track following heavy downpour. Warning through Anti-Collision Device (ACD) to the Station Master, Chiplon, that there were chances of landslide, a major accident involving 2619 DN Matasyagandha Express and 0112 UP Konkan Kanya Express got averted, thus saving precious lives. Immediately after the warning, a speed restriction was imposed and senior engineers and staff rushed to the site.

Till date, inclinometers have detected ten incidents of boulder falls, soil slip and averted accidents on KR during the current monsoon.

The Konkan Railway has commissioned inclinometers connected with modified Raksha Dhaga boxes and interfaced with ACD by fixing 14,000 numbers of inclinometers to prevent fall of boulders on the track.

The Konkan Railway has also fixed the Raksha Dhaga on 106 rock cuttings. It has detected nine cases of boulder-fall in this monsoon and prevented accidents.

The Konkan Railway passes through a very challenging terrain along its 760 kilometres track facing the fury of the nature. Landslides and boulder-falls due to heavy rains are a common feature of the entire region.

The focus of the Konkan Railway is to make use of indigenous solutions to prevent disasters and to set up a pre-warning system on the route about natural calamities for taking timely preventive action.
