Indian Independence Day celebrated in Yangon
New Delhi: August 16, 2004

Floral tributes offered at the Mazar of Bahadur Shah Zafar

As part of the Indian Independence Day celebrations in Yangon, Myanmar, a large number of people including members of Indian community, friends of India and Embassy officials visited the Mazar of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughl Emperor and offered floral tributes to the great freedom fighter who led India's first independence struggle in 1857 and who was exiled by the British to Yangon where he breathed his last.

Earlier in the morning at a solemn but colourful ceremony at the Indian Chaneery premises, the Independence Day was celebrated with the unfurling of the National Flag, singing of the National Anthem and reading of the President's address to the Nation by Charge'd Affairs, Shri Rahul Kulshreshth. Children were also present in large number. Patriotic songs were rendered by a group of PIOs and a film titled "Steps and Strides" was also screened. Hindi books were donated to Indian community organisations by the Embassy.
