Sowing of Kharif Crops
New Delhi: September 4, 2003

The rainfall has adequately covered most parts of the country. This has facilitated normal to good sowing of major kharif crops. The area progression so far this year as compared to last year is as follows:

There is no report of shortage of any commonly used chemical pesticides or bio-pesticides in the country. The incidence of pest & diseases remains below the Economic Threshold Level generally for most of the crops.

The Central Water Commission monitors the live storage of the 71 important reservoirs having Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 131.28 billion cubic meters (BCM) which is about 79% of total reservoir capacity in the country. The present total water storage is about 49% of FRL, which is 118% of last year's level and 78% of last 10 years' average.

No gregarious locust activity has been noticed during the surveys conducted by the Locust Warning Organization in various localities of Scheduled Desert Area of Gujarat and Rajasthan . Due to wide spread rainfall in almost the entire Scheduled Desert Area, the ecological conditions are becoming favourable for localized locust breeding. Intensive surveys are being conducted to detect any locust activity in the Scheduled Desert Area.
