Committment towards Women tickets by Political Parties
New Delhi: November 23, 2003

Analysis of party-tickets given to women clearly establishes that no political party is sincere to permit women a reasonable representation in the legislature. Despite tall claims Congress has fielded twelve women candidates and BJP just only six for the 70 seats of Delhi Assembly. This being the case of a metropolitan city, one can hope even worse ticket-allocation to women on all-India basis. It becomes necessary to amend the provisions to ensure women adequate representation in the next Lok Sabha.

Best way is of Constitutional amendment to provide one-third reservation to women in legislature. Ideally this must not be difficult because strength of parties publicly announcing their support is much more than two-third strength of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha separately. But since it is clear that major parties are befooling women by engineering disturbance even in presentation of the bill, easier way as suggested by Election Commission to make it mandatory for political parties for compulsion of at least one-third party-tickets to women must be adopted before next Lok Sabha elections.
