Letter to Editor - IT scrutiny for Electoral candidates
New Delhi: November 15, 2003

Central Board of Direct Taxes should form a special cell for close scrutiny of assets and incomes of all the candidates contesting elections. It should be a rule that cases of all contestants and their family-members may be compulsorily scrutinised by exclusives wards and cells set up for the purpose in different ranges without being closed under summary-assessment scheme. Income Tax (IT) returns filed should be matched with affidavits filed by them with nominations.

Huge money whole-heartedly wasted in ‘gamble’ of contesting elections creates all doubts about the truth contained in affidavits filed in election-procedure about assets of contestants and their family-members. Such a scrutiny may drastically lower rush of aspirants of party-tickets in elections, and may perhaps revive golden old days when politics was taken as social-service in real sense, rather than for money-minting in present days!
