CBI probe in Stamp Paper Scam
New Delhi: November 23, 2003

It refers to Union Government’s wise step for CBI probe in multi-crore stamp-paper scam. Hesitation of Maharashtra and Karnatak governments in CBI probe smelt foul. Union Government should have power for CBI probe of scams involving more than one state. Death-penalty should be there for persons involved in big scams say above Rs 50 crores.

Stamp-papers maybe sold through widespread network of banks, post-offices and other government agencies abolishing private vendors and should be in less number of denominations like Rs 10, 100, 1000 and 10000 to ensure easy availability. Currency-related crimes can be checked only by stringent measures to drastically transform currency-circulation in banking transactions in a manner people may find excess currency as ‘paper’ of no practical use!
