SAIL produces 11.8 million tonnes Iron Ore
New Delhi: May 9, 2003

The mines under Raw Material Division (RMD) of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), Calcutta have shown a growth of 44 per cent in production of Iron Ore during 2002-03 as compared to 1989-90. It produced 11.8 million tonnes in 2002-03 and 11.2 million tonnes in 2001-02. It despatched the entire produce in 2002-03.

The other product of the Raw Material Division is flux (limestone and dolomite). RMD produced 1.12 million tonnes of flux during 2002-03 and despatched 1.20 million tonnes. Due to major technological changes, the quality of flux (Limestone and Dolomite) of RMD mines was no longer found suitable for use in steel plants. Accordingly, total supply of flux has gradually been brought down in tune with the demand from the steel plants to 1.20 million tonnes during the year 2002-03 as compared to 2.47 million tonnes in 1989-90.

This information was given by the Minister for Steel Shri Braja Kishore Tripathy in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
