The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) a public sector undertaking of the Steel Ministry has recently approved installation of a 130-tonne ladle furnace in Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP)'s SMS to further improve both the quality and volume of the plant's main product, continuous cast billets. To be set up at an estimated cost of around Rs. 23.33 crore, the ladle furnace will not only help to achieve better control of temperature and steel chemistry but production of special grades of steel. By significantly reducing energy consumption, the furnace will contribute to lowering plant's cost of production. The furnace will have associated facilities for ladle transfer, degassing, ferro-alloy feeding, electrics and instrumentation. The project is expected to be competed by October 2004.

Approval has also been granted for rebuilding Coke Oven Battery (COB) # 1 at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to provide much-needed support for the plant's stepped-up production plans. Rebuilding of the 21 year old COB # 1 has been long overdue, the last having taken place in April 1979. The SAIL Board has approved an investment of around Rs.112.5 crore for rebuilding the battery into an environment-friendly one in four packages with participation of international companies which are leaders in pollution control technology. The project is expected to be completed by April 2005.
