New Delhi: May 12, 2003

Indian Railways is in the process of procuring latest ultrasonic rail flaw detection machine for faster and more reliable testing of its rails. As of now, rails are being tested ultrasonically by single rail testers and double rail testers.

In order to have better management of rail defect progression, Indian Railways has participated in a project of World Railway Union (UIC), Paris on Rail Defect Management which was attended by railway experts from eight other countries. Subsequently, Indian Railways research organization Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) has been awarded the prestigious project involving research in the field of fault propagation in rails for developed countries like Japan, South Africa and a few European countries. RDSO has earned Rs.1.30 crore in foreign exchange by way of research fees.
