Rail Coach Factory produces Diesel- Electric Multiple Unit for Metre Gauge
New Delhi: May 12, 2003

The Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, a Production Unit under the Ministry of Railways, has manufactured the first Diesel Electric Multiple Unit for metre gauge routes of the network. It will replace the existing locomotives hauled short distance trains. At present the route length of metre gauge network of Indian Railways comes o 15,178 km.

One metre guage Diesel Eletric Multiple Unit consists of six coaches with a seating capacity of 424 passengers and can carry more than 1000 passengers at a time. Introduction of such units will provide comfortable and frequent services to daily passengers of metre gauge sections. Trains having such Units can run at a speed of 75 kmph.

Diesel Electric Multiple Units are designed to ensure maximum safety and comfort to passengers. For the first time, air brake system has been provided on metre gauge lines.
