Austerity measures on Railways
New Delhi: May 14, 2003

Indian Railways have taken several steps to control expenditure. These measures include improving staff productivity, asset utilization, inventory management, fuel consumption and ensuring austerity in travel, publicity and hospitality.

For the last six consecutive years, Railways have achieved consistently saving in the ordinary working expenses as compared to the Budget Estimates.

The existing internal check system on Indian Railways requires all financial transactions to be completely pre-checked in terms of provisions in various Railway Codes, further instructions of the Ministry of Railways from time to time and also recognized standards of financial propriety.
